Chris Hawk A Surfers Prayer

Image
"Peace. Love. Surf." - Chris Hawk Now that I am beyond peril Commend me not on land In soil, to dirt Fuel for worms And all the earth's corruption Lay me down In the bosom of the stormy sea In the grip of Poseidon's frenzy Let your tears swell the tide That bear all craft aloft To fair winds and the quay side At the pleasure of Mac LĂr Let my coffin fall past The watchful eye of sharks To join those who fell before Sailors, pirates, mermaids And all who ride upon the spray Fire the Bofors gun Once for my life Once for my love Once for my son Once for my soul Lost on the cresting wave Chris Hawk surfer, shaper, Surfers' Hall of Fame inductee, died of cancer Oct. 23 here at his home in San Clemente. Explore Marine Protected Area Maps with Surfrider

Decades of overfishing, coastal development, and pollution have taken a toll on Southern California's ocean environment. To help improve our ocean's health, the State is setting aside protected zones similar to state parks so that marine life can thrive. After a year of 'map-making' and planning, the Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) process is in the home stretch. Local stakeholders are putting final touches on the maps and will come up with three different proposals. The three proposals will ultimately be forwarded to the Fish and Game Commission where they will vote on one map they think will work best for southern California. This is one of your last chances to give meaningful input on where marine protected areas should be located! Please join Surfrider to learn more about the Marine Life Protection Act and to discuss the proposed maps. After the community forums, will compile all constructive comments into a letter that will be sent to decision makers be

Plan Your Free Beach Wedding In San Clemente

Image
Plan A Free Beach Wedding In Southern California? This from the "Who Knew" file! As long as your group is 20 people or less, you can get married as early as 4:00 am on the San Clemente beach, free of charge! The city does ask for some paperwork, primarily to advise Marine Safety about the activity and so that wedding-goers understand some of the challenges a beach wedding poses: long walks for guests, walking in the sand in dress shoes, weather and wind conditions which can cause it to be cold, sand to blow, and dresses to billow, noise from trains and pounding surf that might make it difficult for guests to hear your vows. September-March are considered best times, since beaches are least crowded. The San Clemente Pier is also an option for a wedding. Laura Barnett in BP&R highly recommends some of San Clemente's ocean-view parks Contact her directly (949)361-8264 to learn how to get permits for park use and also to see what's available for groups larg

OC VOTERS STRONGLY OPPOSED TO TOLL ROAD THROUGH STATE PARK

Image
Disney was right in 1959. for the solution to our traffic problems we need to look no further than our own back yard... A bipartisan team of pollsters, Dr. Jan van Lohuizen (Voter/Consumer Research) and David Binder (David Binder Research), today released new findings from an Orange County public opinion survey regarding the proposed Foothill South toll road through San Onofre State Beach. The survey research's central finding reaffirms that a large majority of Orange County Voters surveyed (63 percent) opposes a toll road through the state park. The updated survey illustrates that while Orange County voters may support toll roads, once they learn the implications of the proposed Foothill South Toll Road and the negative impact it wouldhave on San Onofre State Beach, the more strongly they oppose it. The findings show that, compared to a poll conducted by the same team of pollsters last year, there has been no erosion whatsoever in public opposition to the toll ro

San Clemente Pier Surf Culture

San Clemente is defined by our coastline; 13 surf breaks are in city limits. California’s legendary surf break, Lower Trestles, is located at the mouth of San Mateo Creek, just south of Casa Pacifica, Richard Nixon’s former Western White House. Surf culture reigns. San Clemente has “surf” moms, not “soccer” moms. San Clemente High School holds surfing classes at the pier. Mark McElroy, Saddleback College’s head football coach and San Clemente High School alum, wrote the Saddleback College surfing curriculum. Huntington Beach and Santa Cruz may vie for the title “Surf City USA,” but San Clemente High School has held the NSSA national surfing title in six of the last seven years. Residents are fiercely protective of city beachfront. Derail the Trail, a citizens’ grassroots group, formed in the 1990s to oppose a three-mile concrete trail from North Beach to San Clemente State Park. San Clemente City Council rejected the concrete trail in a 5-0 vote in 1999. A Council-app

San Clemente Sea Monster Sighting

I Saw a Sea Monster, by Ralph Bandini From Esquire Magazine for Men, June 1934 Have any of you ever seen a sea monster? No? Very well—I have! It is an amazing story—and true in every detail. I am quite aware that it takes square issue with science. I have no illusions as to inevitable scepticism. Nevertheless, I know what I saw—and I tell it as I saw it. Just at the moment sea monsters constitute what is known in newspaper parlance as "hot copy." Almost any week in the daily papers, in Sunday supplements, in magazines, the reader can find some yarn telling of this or that strange creature seen in the sea. It is almost as though all the hidden monsters of the depths had suddenly taken it into their heads to pop up to the surface. Of course there is nothing new in this matter of sea monsters. For hundreds, even thousands of years, sailormen have brought to port tales of sea serpents—but their stories have been scoffed at. Scientists have gravely declared that no s

San Clemente's Not The Same, Mr Nixon You're To Blame

Image
The 1969 protest song San Clemente's Not The Same. (Mr Nixon you're to blame) Sung by Barbara Foster Written by Myron Ace Produced by Preview Records. The theme of this classic denounces the Washington/political tourist crowd that bombarded San Clemente after Richard Nixon moved to our coastal hamlet and bought the Cotton's estate. To this day the home is still known as the Western White House. Related articles San Clemente's Not the Same, Mr Nixon You're to Blame! Wear Sunscreen

If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience... I will dispense this advice now. Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth; oh nevermind; you will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they have faded. But trust me, in 20 years you'll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can't grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked... You're not as fat as you imagine. Don't worry about the future; or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubblegum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind; the kind that blindside you at 4pm on some idle Tuesday. Do one thing everyday that scares you. Sing. Don't
