Ocean Festival, an annual event on the pier in San Clemente is coming up. Join us next weekend as we celebrate Ocean Festival July 16 & 17th, 2011. Free parking and free round trip shuttle service will be available from the San Clemente High School. 700 Avenida Pico, San Clemente, CA 82672 Saturday July 16 6:30 am - 8:30 pm Sunday July 17 6:30 am - 5:30 pm Activities of the Ocean Realm are overseen by King Neptune, on land known as Ed Howie, and Ariel, known on land as Megan Yaklyvich. The day begins at 6:30 am on the pier with a Children's Fishing Clinic. Registration for the "Groms Rule" surf contest for ages 14 and under begins at 6 am. The contest will take place between 7 am - 4 pm just north of the pier. City Lifeguard Pancake Breakfast 7:30 - 11:00 am Kid's beach run and California Waterman & Waterwoman Championships follow. On August 5, 1970, the (San Clemente) City Council voted unanimously to take 10 lots away from private owners to create the existing parking triangle for public use. Come to the San Clemente Pier this Saturday and be a part of one of the largest volunteer events of the year. Last year more than 80,600 volunteers worked together to collect more than 1,300,000 pounds of trash and recyclables from our beaches, lakes, and waterways. Come do your part!

Classic coin operated parking meters are being replaced with the solar powered credit card readers. I saw the new parking meters at the Pier Bowl in San Clemente. Times have sure changed!

Plan A Free Beach Wedding In Southern California? This from the "Who Knew" file! As long as your group is 20 people or less, you can get married as early as 4:00 am on the San Clemente beach, free of charge! The city does ask for some paperwork, primarily to advise Marine Safety about the activity and so that wedding-goers understand some of the challenges a beach wedding poses: long walks for guests, walking in the sand in dress shoes, weather and wind conditions which can cause it to be cold, sand to blow, and dresses to billow, noise from trains and pounding surf that might make it difficult for guests to hear your vows. September-March are considered best times, since beaches are least crowded. The San Clemente Pier is also an option for a wedding.
